Sailing Instructions for all SSRS Races
For dates, see the Schedule page

1. Rules
SSRS races will be governed by:

2. Entries
A Registration/Hold Harmless Form must be on file for the season in order to be eligible. Eligible boats may be entered in a race by having its skipper come within hail of the Race Committee directly prior to a race and by making known his intention to race. Eligibility requirements for boats intending to participate are as detailed in the Notice of Race, or in the Amendments to these Sailing Instructions.

3. Notices To Competitors
Notices to competitors will be discussed at the skippers meeting.

4. Changes to he Sailing Instructions
Any change to the Sailing Instructions will be discussed at the skippers meeting

5. Signals Made Ashore
The Race Leadership will not utilize signals from the shore. If the warning signal near the ramp signals a small craft warning, racing will be cancelled and boats should return to shore.

6. Schedule of Races
Races are scheduled as detailed in the Notice of Race or in Amendments to the Sailing Instructions, which will be announced at the skipper's meeting.

7. Racing Area
Racing will take place on the navigable area of Lake Arkabutla, visible from the Hernando Point Ramp.

8. The Course
The courses will be based on the illustration below. The number of of legs (W2, W4, or W6) will be announced during the Skipper's Meeting, but may be modified before each round of starts.

9. Marks
The  marks will be as detailed by the DSA Race Committee during the Skipper's Meeting. Mark "2" should not be considered a mark of the course unless boats racing are about to round it.
The "Gate is Closed". Boats are not allowed to cross the start/Finish line except when starting or finishing
.

10. The Start
10.1 Races will be as detailed in the Notice of Race, or in the Amendments to the Sailing Instructions, or during the Skipper's Meeting. Races will be started as follows.

The start sequence for first race will begin as soon as possible after the meeting to allow the course to be set or adjusted if needed and to give all skippers at the meeting a reasonable opportunity to get onto the course.

The DSA RC will utilize the Audible-Signal Racing System prescribed under Appendix U of US Sailing's Prescriptions, appended to the World Sailing Rules of Sailing, summarized here:

There will be an attention signal ( Several mixed length blasts) - approx 15 seconds before the warning. The start of each sound signal indicates the proper time in the sequence.

The Starting Sequence, and signaling methods, may be changed before the race at the discretion of the DSA Race Committee.

10.2  The starting line will be as detailed by the SSRS Race Leadership during the Skipper's Meeting.

10.3  Boats whose Preparatory Signal has not been made shall keep clear of the starting area and of all boats whose Preparatory Signal has been made.

10.4 When there is no official start boat anchored on station, starters will self-police. If two skippers call a third "over early" that skipper must return to start correctly. Non-compliance should be reported to the Race Leadership.

10.5 A boat shall not start later than 3 minutes after her Starting Signal.

11. The Finish
11.1 The finish line will be the same line as the start line - only downwind.

11.2 If boats that are about to finish notice that they will be interrupting another class' starting sequence, the finishing boat's race will be extended by one lap in order to avoid confusion/collisions.

12. Time Limit
Due to the short length of the courses, there will be no Time Limit.

13. Time Keeping/Scoring
Time-keeping will be done on the honor system by the participants themselves. Participants must record their own finish times and report them to the Race Leader at the end of racing. The time to be the recorded shall be the "Clock-Time" (not the duration of the race) - including minutes and seconds. That time shall be based on the time shown by their cell phone providers - either directly from the cell phone, or from a watch synchronozed to a cell phone. Scoring will be done as described in the Notice of Race

14. Safety
DSA has elected that for all races a Type III (or Type II) personal flotation device be worn by each competitor while racing. Competitors not complying with this instruction will be scored "DSQ". Furthermore, DSA encourages each competitor to wear a PFD at all times when on the water.

When, in the opinion of the SSRS Race Leader or his/her substitute, at the time of the skippers meeting, winds are in excess of 4 Bft (17 mph/15 knots), races will only be held if agreed upon by all members present. Participation indicates agreement. As always - sailors participate at their own risk, as per the entry form, required to be signed before participation.

15. Prizes
Prizes for the series will be awarded at the Annual Banquet. The number of prizes will be determined based on the number of qualifiers/participants.
